The West Versus the Rest

People keep asking for a softer name. The contest in front of us already has one. It is the West versus the Rest.

On one side is an inheritance that can still correct itself: a law that can remove a person from office, a laboratory that can publish the flaw, and the peoples who built the countries on the map. On the other side are rivals who kept a long clock. China, with the magnets and the strait. A party-state that can wait thirty years without asking a foreign court for permission. That is the external contest. A burned school in France belongs to a different ledger.

The condition at home is plain enough. The old order can no longer pay for itself. The debts are heavy. The trust has been spent. The border exists more clearly on paper than on the ground. The institutions go on performing their procedures for a room that stopped believing them. That condition shows up in more than one place. The places do not share a single cause.

On the first of October, 2026, French students were blockading their lycées over missing teachers, crowded classrooms, and buildings left to rot. During those protests someone set a fire at Lycée Nelson Mandela in Nantes, and the entrance hall burned. Another fire was filmed at a school entrance in Rouen. In Marseille a fire truck was taken and burned. On Wednesday the police detained 625 people, and 83 officers were hurt. The grievance is a state that will not maintain its own schools. The arson is a crime committed in the middle of that grievance. Folding both into a story about a foreign invasion makes the truth smaller.

In September the AfD took 43.8 percent in Saxony-Anhalt and 38.2 percent in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. That is two states in the old East, not the whole of it. Restore Britain, the party led by Rupert Lowe, says it has 11,117 supporters in Scotland. That number is the party's own, and nobody independent has verified it. Its first Scottish candidate stands in the Mid Argyll by-election on the 29th of October. A ballot and a membership list are arguments inside the West about where the border ought to sit. They are not an army arriving from somewhere else.

I am a European with ancestral ties to this ground. A genetic record can show that a family line and a country have stayed in company for a very long time. This essay does not attach a laboratory report, and it does not need one to refuse the Union's dictionary. The same offices that opened the gate wrote the word "indigenous" so that a people who still hold their own state would never qualify for it. I do not accept that dictionary. I do not accept the European Union. A treaty is not a people. My refusal does not unsign Lisbon. A state can leave. A person cannot.

What is happening to local people has a clock on it, and it is not the slogan on the lycée banner. For years the crime tables in Germany and Sweden have shown several foreign-national groups taking a larger share of violent and sexual offenses than their share of the population. Those tables ought to be published in ordinary language. The British inquiries into Rotherham, Rochdale, and Oldham already established the grooming gangs: local girls, years of exploitation, and authorities who arrived late because a plain description was inconvenient. A Danube Institute count, reported in 2026, found that nearly half of 221 jihadist plots in Europe between 2015 and 2025 involved at least one migrant, and that most of those plotters had radicalized after they arrived. Paris and Nice account for most of the dead, so the count is not permission to tell every attack as the same story. This is not every person who came from somewhere else. It is large enough to change a street. A people who will not print a pattern will not keep a country.

The Rest does not have to take Paris. It can wait. A West that is busy with unpaid schools and unnamed crime sheets has less left for the strait, the magnets, and the machine. The rival capitals plan in decades, and they put a name on a failure.

The question for the species is a bet, not a prophecy. The mind now being built will sit above ministries. If the first decisive one is trained and owned inside a closed state, the species inherits that state's refusals. I want it built here, by people who can be sued, fired, and told they are wrong, and I want it built faster than the alternative. Saving the West is how a future remains in which a bad order can still be refused.

Order has always been purchased with hierarchy. A people with no spine does not hold a civilization. Hierarchy with no way to correct the person at the top becomes a cage. So bind it to a purpose, and write the purpose down where a crowd cannot rewrite it at midnight.

The purpose is small enough to check. The historic peoples of Europe remain the principals of their own countries. The border is a door with a law behind it. Illegal entry is a legal status, and a statute can undo it. A crowd cannot. A non-citizen convicted of a serious crime can be removed where the law already allows removal. The person who entered under the law, and lives under it, is not the enemy. The public aim is a country that can pay its bills, a defense that deters, a school that opens, and a right that survives a bad year. Office is earned by a record a stranger can read, failures included. One person owns the decision. The term ends. A miss follows the name out the door. The person who decided pays when the decision was wrong. A true report is safe to give. Punish the person who brought it, and you are the one who ought to be fired.

The Union will not do this. It has no desk where a people's refusal can be filed. The work sits with the nations: the vote, the statute, the border, the published table, the school with its teachers in it. Choose people who have already been wrong in public and have paid for it. Fire them when they lie. Leave the purpose with the people who built the place, and leave the facts in the open.

The Rest can wait. That is its advantage. Ours is that we can still correct ourselves, if we remember who the principal is.
